چکیده

We present our results of Monte-Carlo simulations of polarized Compton Xrays from magnetic cataclysmic variables, with realistic density, temperature and velocity structures in the accretion flow. Our study has shown that the X-ray linear polarization may reach about 8% for systems with high accretion rates viewed at a high viewing inclination angle. This value is roughly twice the maximum value obtained by previous studies which assumed a cold, static emission region with a uniform density. We also investigate the X-ray polarization properties of ultra-compact double-degenerate binaries for the unipolar-inductor and direct-impact accretor models. Our study has shown negligible X-ray polarization for the unipolar-induction model. However, the direct-impact accretor model may give X-ray polarization levels similar to that predicted for the magnetic cataclysmic variables.

SNe Ia are thought to be exploding white dwarfs in binary systems. The most likely type of progenitor system (Branch et al. 1995; see also Iben & Tutukov 1984) is a C-O white dwarf accreting H/He-rich gas from a companion, either from its wind or through Roche lobe overflow. Coalescing pairs of C-O white dwarfs are also possible, while accreting sub-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarfs are less like...

Accreting White Dwarfs As Supersoft X-ray Sources

I review various phenomena associated with mass-accreting white dwarfs (WDs) in the view of supersoft X-ray sources. When the mass-accretion rate is low (Ṁacc < a few ×10M⊙yr), hydrogen nuclear burning is unstable and nova outbursts occur. A nova is a transient supersoft X-ray source (SSS) in its later phase which timescale depends strongly on the WD mass. The X-ray turn on/off time is a good i...

Xss J 00564 + 4548 and Igr J 00234 + 6141 — New Cataclysmic Variables from Rxte and Integral All Sky Surveys

We present the results of optical identification of two X-ray sources from RXTE and INTEGRAL all sky surveys: XSS J00564+4548 and IGR J00234+6141. Using the optical data from Russian-Turkish 1.5-m Telescope (RTT150) and SWIFT X-ray observations, we show that these sources most probably are intermediate polars, i.e. binary systems with accreting white dwarfs with not very strong magnetic field (...

Accretion onto Magnetic White Dwarfs

Recent developments in the accretion onto magnetic white dwarfs are reviewed. Accreting magnetic white dwarfs display many of the characteristics of accreting systems of a galactic scale, with the advantage that in these systems the accreting material is collimated into a relatively well-determined 1-dimensional ow.

Unravelling the Puzzle of the Eclipsing Polar Sdssj 015543.40+002807.2 with Xmm and Optical Photometry/spectropolarimetry

The cataclysmic variable SDSSJ 015543.40+002807.2 is confirmed to be a magnetic system of the AM Herculis type. With an orbital period of 87.13 minutes, it is also the shortest-period eclipsing Polar known. Monitoring with XMM-Newton finds a high-state light curve dominated by a single X-ray emitting accretion pole located slightly prograde of the secondary star. The hard X-ray spectrum is typi...
